07/06/04 The FTTP battlefield: Active Ethernet vs. PON LightWave BARRY KANTNER The rationale of using a passive optical infrastructure to deliver broadband services made clear sense in the mid 1980s when PON solutions were first introduced. Since prices for fiber-optic cable and optical transceivers were exorbitant, sharing those resources was the only practical way to deploy optical services cost-effectively. Today, the cost of fiber-optic cable and optical transceivers is a fraction of what they were, and great advances have been made to reduce the cost of installing, splicing, and terminating fiber. These cost reductions combined with the reach, scalability, and revenue generation potential of a switched, point-to-point optical solution make selecting standards-based Ethernet a very attractive option for PON. |
|
07/02/04 Has The Time For PON Arrived? Network Magazine Lane F. Cooper As market demand for broadband services continues to expand, vendors are rolling out Passive Optical Networking (PON) solutions to deliver higher-bandwidth connections to homes and businesses in the U.S. and abroad. More importantly, synergy between Ethernet and PON is leading to renewed interest in Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) deployments. Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) are catching on as an emerging access network technology that provides a low-cost method of deploying optical access lines between a carrier's central office (CO) and a customer site. |
|
07/01/04 Opportunity Knocks for FTTP
Gary H. Bishop Once barricaded by seemingly insurmountable regulatory and cost hurdles, the last mile stretch in the access network is being targeted by major players primarily RBOCs and MSOs who are wagering their stakes to provide business and residential subscribers efficient and affordable high-speed, bandwidth-rich voice, video, and data services. Given cable's edge in providing video through a hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) typology, declining margins in local and long-distance services, and DSL's short lifecycle to provide the ideal solution for the triple play, the RBOCs are contemplating a PON-based, Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) strategy as a means to secure their future revenue stream and competitive viability. |

05/01/03 Are PONs too small for the big fish? LightWave The prospects for fiber in the U.S. local loop brightened recently when the Federal Communications Commission handed the incumbent local-exchange carriers (ILECs) a virtual monopoly on broadband services, provided that those services reach customers over new fiber-optic infrastructure. As ILECs provided much of the input to the first International Telecommunication Union (ITU) passive-optical-network (PON) standards (Recommendations G.983.1 and G.983.2) as part of the Full Service Access Network (FSAN) initiative, it seems reasonable to conclude that (assuming the ILECs take the FCC's hint) the promise of PONs in the United States may finally come to fruition in the relative near-term. |

04/01/03 GPON: The next big thing in optical access networks LightWave OREN MARMUR, FlexLight Networks GPON is the most advanced PON protocol in the marketplace today, offering multiple-service support with the richest possible set of OAM&P features. It offers far higher efficiency when compared to both APON and, especially, EPON.
GPON also offers the lowest cost system for all modes of operation. Not only is the system cost itself expected to be lower as no external adaptation is required, but exceptionally higher efficiency also leads to much more “revenue bits” from the same system, i.e. a much shorter payback period.
Ensuring simplicity and scalability when it comes to dealing with new and emerging services, GPON offers a clear migration path for emerging services without any disruption to existing GPON equipment or alterations to the transport layer.

03/17/03 Little city lights Telephony Ed Gubbins Down the street from the Pacific Bell Park, where the San Francisco Giants play, is a 300-acre plot of waterfront property built atop the ruins of the 1989 earthquake. The commercial and residential community being developed here, called Mission Bay, is also the site of SBC Communications' sole commercial trial of passive optical networking (PON) for fiber to the user. |

02/18/03 PON moves forward Network World Daniel Briere and Claudia Bacco The Passive Optical Networking industry has made some key steps forward since our last column on the subject two months ago. Most significantly, the ITU-T has approved the first two components of the Gigabit PON standard - G.984.1 and G.984.2 - and reached an "almost frozen" draft stage on a third, G.984.3. |
